STORYLINE:

Following his appointment as IAEA Director General, Rafael Mariano Grossi today (12 Dec) told a Special Session of the Agency’s General Conference that the organization is “indispensable” in making sure nuclear material “scattered around the world in countless nuclear power plants and facilities is not misused.”

After taking the oath of office, Grossi said “no one else can do what we can do. No one else can provide these credible assurances that nobody is diverting nuclear material to make nuclear weapons.”

Turning to the Agency’s work to make nuclear technology available for peaceful purposes, he stated, “we cannot ignore, ladies and gentlemen, that for many there are concerns about nuclear energy and nuclear technologies. And this has to do with our important work in safety and in security. When it comes to these very important aspects, it is the IAEA where truly global work takes place.”

When it comes to responding to climate change and the need to secure adequate supplies of energy in the future, Grossi said “nuclear energy is not part of the problem. It can be, for those wishing so, part of the solution.”

Noting that the United Nations Climate Change Conference is opening today in Madrid, Grossi stressed the vital contribution that nuclear power can make in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Nuclear power provides about 10 percent of the world’s electricity and contributes one third of all low-carbon electricity.

Grossi, a senior Argentinian diplomat with a career spanning several decades in nuclear non-proliferation and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, will take office on Tuesday (3 Dec).

Following his statement, Member State representatives joined Conference President Martha Delgado Peralta, Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights at the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in congratulating Grossi on his appointment as the sixth Director General of the IAEA.
