Chad has opened its arms to hundreds of thousands of people that are fleeing violence in Sudan, on top of an existing refugee and displaced population. I witnessed this remarkable generosity firsthand when I visited Adré and Farchana in eastern Chad. But I've also seen the immense pressure that this has put on the limited resources of Chad, who have been doubly impacted by the crisis in the neighboring country of Sudan.”

STORYLINE:

Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohamed today (18 Sep) said “the stakes are high” and “regional pressures are immense” for Chad, a country that “has opened its arms to hundreds of thousands of people that are fleeing violence in Sudan, on top of an existing refugee and displaced population.”

The High-Level Event on Chad on the margins of the General Assembly’s General Debate, Mohamed said this has put “immense pressure” on Chad’s limited resources.

The Deputy Secretary-General said the United Nations “stands with Chad every step of the way in navigating its path to a prosperous and more inclusive future”

Chad’s Foreign Minister Mahamat Saleh Annadif for his part said, “how could we bring together the sons and daughters of Chad so that we could act together and work toward a peaceful transition that would allow us to return to constitutional order. And that's why we had negotiations, which lead to Doha, and which culminated in the Doha Agreement, the first major milestone.”

High-Level Event seeks to promote high-level strategic political dialogue between Chad and its international partners, encouraging global solidarity in supporting Chad's political transition as well as Chad in the transition context regarding development and humanitarian assistance.
