STORYLINE
At a joint press conference on Sunday (6 Oct), members of a joint high-level mission to the Central African Republic noted the progress in the implementation of the Political Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in the country.

The high-level joint mission composed of the AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, Smail Chergui, the UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix, and the Director General-Africa of the European Union External Action Service, Koen Vervaeke.

Speaking to reporters, UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix said, “there has been some progress since the signing of the agreement. And I would like to quote some very concrete figures.”

Lacroix continued, “between June and October of last year, there were 597 recorded incidents, 1,777 victims in incidents of attacks, abuses, or hostile acts, including by armed groups. Ambassador Smail Chergui, Commissioner for Peace and Security of the African Union, strongly condemned the violations to the peace agreement. He said, “we remain committed to continuing to assist you in the implementation of the agreement, but also to use and use Article 35 of the agreement, on sanctions. Finally, Koen Vervaeke, Director General Africa of the European Union External Action Service, called for the organization of fair and transparent elections.
