STORYLINE
The UN chief urged governments, businesses, civil society, young people and activists to “think big and be ambitious,” reiterating that “this is the time for transformation — with all hands on deck. Let’s get the SDGs back on track.”

In a video message at the opening of the SDG Acceleration Day today (17 Sep), Guterres reiterated that this weekend is all about action towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

Speaking to the participants, he highlighted, “you are all part of a great global effort to rescue the SDGs, and deliver the action that our planet and people around the world are counting on.”

Claudia Lopez, Mayor of Bogotá said she is hopeful for the future of the SDGs. She said, “I see the younger generations committed. They understand what is climate change, they don't have to be convinced of changing habits, ways of life, of solidarity.”

Taking from his country’s experience, David Moinina, Chief Minister of Sierra Leone said, “Leadership will get us there. And I feel like we have and are getting a new sense of leaders who understand the challenges, who realize that we need to accelerate and who are committed to doing that, we need to support them then we will get it done.”

Achim Steiner, Administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) said that in a study conducted by his office, there are dozens of countries now have to spend more money on servicing debt than on the education sector.

However, he said that at federal, at national and local government level, different policies can create different opportunities.

Steiner said, “If the financial system continues to simply value the risk of the lender over the risk of the creditor and all that that implies when you cannot access finance, then we are indeed condemning billions of people to not being able to move forward.”

The UNDP Administrator also reiterated, “We need to think of our era as an era of co-investment, rather than trying to invest, make money and get it out again. And this is applies as much to an individual business or company as it does to our international community of nations.”

The SDG Acceleration Day serves to profile actions, investments and support to accelerate implementation at the country level between now and 2030.

The SDG Acceleration Day will build on the twelve high-impact initiatives that the UN development system is mobilizing around in advance of the SDG Summit. The initiatives correspond with six major SDG transitions; five critical means of implementation and the transversal priority of gender equality.
